Strong earthquake hits Vanuatu Islands

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center inHonolulu has issued a tsunami warning for Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands and New Caledonia. A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 on the Richter scale hit the Vanuatu Islands at 1.14am Friday. In a statement, the Malaysian Meteorological Department said the quake’s epicenter is 2,873km northeast of Honiara, Solomon Islands and 5,382km northeast of Lahad Datu, Sabah. The earthquake at 1.10am did not pose any tsunami threat to Malaysia-Bernama. The warning center says it’s not known if a tsunami was generated. However, it says a quake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines in the region within minutes to hours.
